The 6 1/2-Litre Bentley

After achieving victory in 1924 at the 24 Hours of LeMans race, Bentley had no shortage of customers. The racing successes and widespread public acclaim brought the Bentley Three Litre unprecedented popularity among enthusiastic drivers and a total of 1,622 examples were eventually made. But as more cars were ordered for road use, the simple, lightweight touring bodies for which the Three Litre chassis was designed gradually gave way to coachwork that was more elaborate, larger and heavier. A chassis of heavier construction and a longer wheelbase was needed, and to continue Bentley’s ideal power to weight ratio, a larger, more powerful engine had to be developed.
