THIS CAR
In 1919, Rolls-Royce of America Inc. was launched in Springfield, Massachusetts, and by 1921 the first American Rolls-Royce, the Springfield Silver Ghost, was ready for the public. Its popular Pall Mall tourer body was elegantly fit to the Silver Ghost chassis and became so much a favorite among Rolls-Royce specialists that many acknowledged that the American car’s chassis and bodies were superior to the British examples. Gradually, the American car adopted refinements more suited to the US driver: left-hand drive, American Bosch or Westinghouse six-volt electrical systems, fuel pumps instead of the British sibling’s Autovac, drum headlamps, and tubular bumpers, among others.

When properly maintained and driven, the Silver Ghost engine is nearly indestructible due to its massive design, generous bearing dimensions, very low compression ratio, and low rev capacities. Most of the American Silver Ghosts were bodied by two coachbuilders: Brewster, and the maker of this car, Rolls-Royce Custom Coachwork.

According to Rolls-Royce records, this example, chassis 404MF, originally resided in New England, where it was delivered on Christmas Eve 1924 to Mr. Edward M. Winslow of Lynn, Massachusetts. Since then, a series of well-known Rolls-Royce collectors have owned the Ghost, including long-term ownership by S. Prestley Blake, of Somers, Connecticut. Mr. Blake, the founder of Friendly’s Ice Cream and a prolific collector of Springfield Rolls-Royce cars, counted this tourer as one of his favorites, often using it in Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club tours and meets.

This well-known Silver Ghost now sports lustrous blue paintwork, a tan fabric top with side curtains, dual-side mounted spares, and whitewall tires. The black interior and tan top materials were renewed by Enfield Auto Restoration during ownership by founder Jon Abrahamson and still present well today. According to the consignor, the Ghost has been kept in top mechanical condition and drives excellently. The new owner of this exceptional Rolls-Royce will find its specifications perfectly suited for driving and club events as a very desirable overdrive unit has been fitted to the four-speed gearbox, making it ideal for long-distance touring.

The Springfield chassis was often more robust than the coachwork, meaning precious few examples are available today retaining their original body. According to RROC records, this Ghost still bears its original engine, 22043, and its lovely open bodywork is also original.

With known history from new, as documented by accompanying RROC papers, this Silver Ghost will be ardently welcomed at prestigious concours and events and provide miles of enjoyment on the road.
