First released in 1968, the Ferrari Dino was designed as a lightweight, mid-engine sports car, priced to compete with other high-end offerings of the time, specifically the Porsche 911. Named for Enzo’s beloved son Alfredino, the “Dino” marque was created by Ferrari to market a competitively priced car without detriment to its premium 12-cylinder flagships. Ferrari was already producing vehicles that outpaced the competition. The Dino was the brand’s answer to providing a more affordable entry point to Ferrari ownership.
The Dino quickly gained attention and great acclaim. As the model evolved, the small run of the 206 GT was superseded in 1970 by the 246 GT and the 246 GTS models, which were equipped with a 192 bhp V-6 engine and a steel body providing extra rigidity to facilitate the removable roof panel of the GTS.
The original owner took delivery of this US-specification, air-conditioned GTS in 1973, keeping it for one year prior to trading it to a Phoenix dealership in 1975. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Anthony Stegman purchased the vehicle, and he retained it for the next 40 years. Accompanying receipts demonstrate regular maintenance up until the early 1990s, when the Ferrari was taken off the road for a 10- to 15-year period, protected from the elements in Mr. Stegman’s barn. In 2014, Mr. Stegman delivered the well-preserved 1973 Dino 246 GTS to Ferrari of Denver, leaving the lot in a brand new 458 Spider.
In its current ownership, the GTS has been meticulously overhauled mechanically, with sensitivity toward preserving its originality, and with receipts totaling in excess of $25,000. Coincidentally, the technician who carried out the most recent work had also worked on this Dino in 1975.
Reportedly sporting a sizable percentage of its original coat of Rosso Chiaro paint, the Dino shows some imperfections and signs of touchups, as is expected with a well-preserved yet unrestored vehicle of this caliber. The paintwork has a deep luster and presents very well, and the original upholstery shows signs of light wear consistent with the documented mileage of just over 38,000. The entire car has developed a patina that has matured and evokes the sense of a spirited, vintage Ferrari experience.
This beautifully presented Dino is an excellent driving example of a sought-after collector car produced in limited numbers. Just 1,274 GTSs were produced, and the vast majority have been fully restored. Examples such as this, with a proudly maintained and presented originality, are among the most coveted of all.
