This beautifully preserved 1923 Packard Model EC Fire Engine is based on a Packard commercial truck chassis, examples of which were built from 1918 to 1923. These trucks were powered by four-cylinder engines displacing 432 cubic inches and producing either 32 or 40 hp, depending on the model.
This Packard is outfitted with firefighting apparatus installed by Peter Pirsch & Sons Company of Kenosha, Wisconsin, which operated between 1900 and 1984. It carries the designation of Volunteer Hose Company No. 1 of Suffern, New York, a suburb northwest of New York City.
In September 2004, Mark Smith acquired this incredibly original fire engine from the Wiglesworth Automobile Collection in Shawnee, Kansas. It is accompanied by various firefighting ephemera including hoses, nozzles, a fire extinguisher, and an axe.
Charming and historically significant, this museum-quality artifact is a fascinating reminder of a bygone era.
