Before we were known for triumphing the automotive auction industry with world records, large-scale events, and selling some of the world’s most prized cars, we were guided by just one principle: “quality is our style.” For us, this means imbuing everything we do with integrity and deep appreciation for the heirlooms we offer. We’ve never lost sight of this mission and are gratified by where it has taken us.
David Gooding started Gooding & Company in 2003 with not much else but a network of close friends in the hobby and a hope to present cars “carefully, authentically and with distinction.” Since then, Gooding & Company has had the pleasure of presenting car’s from the world’s finest collections to their next devoted custodians.
To provide history as to how strong the market is right now, just weeks ago was the 2022 Amelia Island Auction, which concluded the company’s most successful auction at the venue with an unprecedented $69,209,480 in sales and a 94% sales rate. With 20 lots selling for over $1,000,000, the auction house indubitably stunned the collector car world once again, redefining the very parameters of the market itself.
The most notable sale of the week was the 1937 Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS Teardrop Coupe, which amassed $13,435,000, setting a world record for the Talbot-Lago marque at auction, as well as the most valuable French car sold at auction. The Talbot-Lago was just one of multiple records set, including the most valuable Japanese car at auction with the 1967 Toyota-Shelby 2000 GT, which sold for$2,535,000. Gooding & Company also made headlines this past August in Pebble Beach, where it sold the most valuable car at auction of 2021: the 1995 McLaren F1, which set a new record for the marque at $20,465,000. The company also rounded out 2021 with a staggering 100% sell-through rate for all automobilia lots.
In the international arena, Gooding & Company garnered worldwide attention from recent auctions in the UK, from its inaugural overseas sale, the “Passion of a Lifetime” auction at Hampton Court Palace, to its two Geared Online auctions in the UK. The company has achieved top sell-through rates, culminating in over £47 million sold and countless world records established.
Ultimately, what matters most to Gooding & Company are the trusting relationships with customers. David Gooding says his business model has dovetailed perfectly with his passion for classic and collector automobiles: “What I love is discovering the special cars, whether it’s a $50,000 car or a $15 million car, and really accentuating the characteristics of the car and presenting them to our clients,” he says. “This is what we do. It’s what we know best and what we love doing.”
