During the Mercer Automobile Company’s brief history, it established a robust reputation for innovation and racing success. Mercer’s powerful L-headengine, performance-focused passenger cars, including the Series 5 Sport model, were prominent examples of automobiles powered by cast monobloc engines. Mercer built the desirable Series 5 from 1919 through 1922, and sold them with a base price of $3,950. The limited production numbers resulted in a unique exclusivity for today’s owners.

The Mercer revolution lives on in this striking 1921 Series 5 Sport four-passenger model. A refurbishment was completed by Woodies & Wheels of Campbell, California, in January 2013. Documentation details the work, which included restoring the fuel system, installing new gaskets, and cleaning and repairing the floorboards. An undated, earlier cosmetic restoration also contributes to this car’s appeal. The Mercer Sporting’s elegant styling is classic 1920s; its period-correct bold red exterior and black fenders are complemented by a black interior with outstanding walnut trim. The car features Rudge-Whitworth wire wheels, a rear tire carrier for the spares, and a radiator-mounted motometer. Also included in the sale are original Mercer tools, including an assortment of wrenches along with the original storage locks and keys, an owner’s manual, and a parts book. In preparation for sale the tires were replaced and the car was detailed. This powerful touring car invites more than a passing glance and is ready for a new steward to enjoy its many charms.
