For over 100 years, the Bentley marque has captivated enthusiasts the world over producing rugged, high-performance machines characterized by superb engineering, purposeful design, and distinctly English character. The victorious factory team cars built under the leadership of W.O. Bentley are particularly revered. Over the decades, these heroic Vintage Bentleys have inspired many enthusiasts to build specials that capture the spirit and style of the priceless originals.

The Bentley special presented here is a particularly remarkable example, designed and built by the renowned Racing Green Engineering Ltd. of Wales, a specialist firm founded by Peris Edwards and Nigel Holmes. Based on a 1949 Bentley Mk VI chassis, numbered B 449 EW, this B Special Speed 8 is a fantastic homage to W.O. Bentley’s favorite model – the legendary Speed Six.

Beautifully executed and detailed, the bodywork follows the construction methods of the original Le Mans cars, with a lightweight ash frame covered in aluminum and fabric. Finished in an attractive black livery and trimmed with high-quality leather, the Bentley is appropriately outfitted with a sporting fold-flat windscreen, cycle fenders, large capacity fuel tank, headlamp stone guards, fishtail exhaust, weather equipment, and extensive instrumentation.

Mechanically, this car features the 5,675 cc B80-type inline eight-cylinder engine, which boasts dry sump lubrication and four SU H6 sidedraft carburetors. The four-speed gearbox utilizes synchromesh on second, third, and fourth gear for ease of shifting, the electrics are designed to meet the demands of modern motoring, and the braking system features servo-assisted drums at all four corners.

Since commissioning its build, the current owner has enjoyed this Bentley on several long-distance rallies, successfully completing the Baltic Classic Rally in 2017, the Holy Land 1000 in 2018 and the Bentley Drivers Club Centenary Extraordinary Drive, a 1,200-mile, Bentley-only rally from John o’ Groats, Scotland, to London, UK, in March 2019. Although the car performed flawlessly during each event, the consignor returned the Bentley to Racing Green Engineering Ltd. to carry out maintenance and service after each rally. More recently, the Bentley has joined the owner’s stable in Southern California, having been driven less than 7,000 miles since its commissioning.

Included with the sale are various road tools, invoices for the maintenance carried out by Racing Green Engineering Ltd., and a letter from the Bentley Drivers Club confirming the identity of B 449 EW.

Presented in superb order throughout and a pleasure to drive, this professionally built and maintained Bentley special is a prime candidate for some of the most exclusive driving events in the world. Combining the timeless style of a W.O. Bentley with an enjoyable, easy-to-master driving experience, this Racing Green B Special Speed 8 presents a unique opportunity for collectors of all stripes.
