Offered from a discerning private collector, this 1949 Ford F-1 Half-Ton Pickup is a solid example that continues to benefit from a high-quality restoration performed under the prior owner. Finished in factory-correct Ford Arabian Green with excellent chrome and glass, the F-1 is equipped with original tan upholstery and very rare factory-original options including the heater, defroster, and fresh-air ventilation system. The engine bay houses a 215 cid, 101 hp overhead valve six with a 12-volt ignition system, mated to the original “Synchro Silent” floor-shifted three-speed manual transmission. Other excellent features include period-correct Ford-scripted 6" x 6", tires and a rare original auxiliary starter crank.
Following acquisition by the current owner in 2012, the F-1 was further elevated and carefully sorted in its presentation. New interior panels and lower kick panels were fitted, the running boards were removed and refinished, and other detail items were addressed, including the purchase and installation of correct protective sleeves for the tail gate-retaining chains. Notably, the control knobs for the heat, defrost, and ventilation system are complete and remain in place, with the stainless steel door handles and grille elements remaining excellent. In the consignor’s care, the F-1 has enjoyed proper storage and occasional use during the warm summer months on a New England estate, with the vehicle reported to start, run, and drive very well. Now offered complete with a Ford Bonus-Built owner’s manual and attractively presented throughout, this 1949 Ford F-1 represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire and enjoy an early example of one of the most successful and influential vehicles ever produced.
The Groundbreaking F-Series
As the longest continuous series produced by the Ford Motor Company, the F-series pickup-truck line began with the newly designed F-1, which debuted in January 1948. Advertised as the “Ford Bonus-Built” line, the F-Series featured a new dedicated truck chassis and eight different weight ratings with pickup, panel, cab-over, conventional, and school-bus chassis and body styles available. Among the many F-Series advancements were flat one-piece windshields, wider cabs, improved ventilation, and a growing list of available options.
While the venerable “Flathead” reached its development peak by the late 1940s, Ford remained the only light-duty truck manufacturer to offer V-8 power until 1954. The F-1 was also available with Ford’s 226 cid L-head inline six from 1948 that delivered nearly the same output as the V-8, followed by the modern OHV 215 cid inline six-cylinder unit that was available with 101 hp from 1952. Many engine and transmission combinations were offered, ensuring Ford’s F-Series trucks could tackle almost any conceivable requirement. Produced through 1952, the original F-Series trucks remain important and enjoyable classics in all respects.
