Built on November 9, 1949, this alloy-bodied XK120, 670025, was the 25th left-hand-drive example completed by the Jaguar works.
Originally finished in black with red leather upholstery, this XK120 was delivered to its first owner through US Jaguar distributor Max Hoffman in New York City and immediately put to use as a race car. It is believed that noted driver M.R.J. “Doc” Wyllie campaigned this XK in East Coast sports car races before he acquired a C-Type in1954.
Like many XK120s that raced throughout the late 1950s and 1960s, this alloy-bodied roadster was continuously updated with more advanced Jaguar components to remain competitive. Over the years 670025 benefitted from classic high- performance features, such as a 3.8-litre engine, C-Type head, larger SU carburetors, disc brakes, and lightweight C-Type bucket seats.
For many years Paul Peattie and Ali Lugo d’Armas, a well-known East Coast racer and vintage sports car collector, jointly owned this rare alloy-bodied XK120. Subsequent owner Rob Mooney continued to race the Jaguar competitively in vintage events at VIR, Lime Rock, and Bridgehampton.
The current owner purchased 670025 in 2007 and immediately commissioned an exhaustive nut-and-bolt restoration. With the aim of creating an ideal dual-purpose sports car, the consignor enlisted the services of two highly regarded marque specialists, Mike Wilson’s Restorations in Visalia, California, and Terry’s Jaguar Parts in Benton, Illinois.
Between 2007 and 2009, the Jaguar was completely restored to concours standards while integrating the finest mechanical features for improved performance and drivability. The thorough two-year restoration process has resulted in a spectacular event-eligible XK120 with a tasteful period-correct appearance and exhilarating performance.
The 3.8-litre engine – equipped with SU sandcast carburetors, reworked camshafts, and a ported and polished C-Type head – is said to produce more than 300 hp and exceptional low-end torque. An improved Borg-Warner five-speed gearbox effectively transfers power to the rear wheels while the front disc brakes and lightweight Dunlop racing wheels contribute to outstanding road manners.
Beautifully finished in the elegant color combination of Battleship Grey with brown leather upholstery, this Jaguar achieves a balance between striking and understated in appearance. In keeping with its competition-oriented character, the XK120 has been appropriately outfitted with rare C-Type-style lightweight seats, Brooklands screens, leather bonnet strap, outside fuel filler, Lucas tri-beam headlamps, and auxiliary spotlights.
In August 2009, 670025 made its post- restoration debut at the annual Carmel-by-the- Sea Concours on the Avenue where it earned Best in Class honors. During 2010, the XK120 Alloy appeared at the prestigious Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance and the Belmont Concours d’Eleganza and, as recently as 2011, it participated in the Presidio of San Francisco Concours d’Elegance.
In addition to serving as a successful and much-admired concours entrant, this Jaguar has been an exciting and reliable rally car, completing both the California Mille and the Colorado Grand without incident. Purpose built for long-distance driving events with just 2,500 miles since its complete restoration, this limited-production XK120 Alloy offers its new owner the rare opportunity to acquire a beautifully presented and event- proven Jaguar.
