Oldsmobile produced its model year 1949 Station Wagon with wood trim for only a few months before switching to an all-steel, faux wood-grained “tin woodie,” thus ending the use of real wood on Oldsmobiles forever. Exact production figures for these wood-trimmed cars are not known, but they are considered exceedingly rare and are seldom offered for sale.
The elegant Station Wagon offered here combines the power and reliability of Oldsmobile’s legendary “Rocket” V-8 engine with the Old World charm of a wood-bodied car. This car was recently treated to a comprehensive mechanical restoration, including a rebuild of the engine, transmission, and rear differential. Since the restoration, this Oldsmobile has accumulated only enough miles for road-testing and proper sorting. The owner states that the 303 cid Rocket engine, along with the four-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, make it an absolute pleasure to drive.
This Oldsmobile is finished in its original factory color of Ivy Green accented with Nankeen Cream wheels, a color scheme that complements the warm colors of the genuine wood trim. The interior features a heavy use of wood trim, as well as newly re-covered seats trimmed in period-correct burgundy leather. Exuding character and style, this Station Wagon presents a unique opportunity to acquire a rare and functional piece of Americana.
