In 1952, Ford Motor Company set out to build the most opulent and exclusive American automobile of its time, intended to evoke the spirit of magnificent prewar classics. Eschewing the flamboyant chrome and paint schemes of the era, Ford chose to rely on clean, graceful lines to project understated elegance. The result, the Continental Mark II, was unveiled at the Paris Auto Show in October 1955, and its design remains as impressive today as when it first debuted.
According to a copy of its production order form, Winnie L. Leigh of Huntington Station, New York, commissioned this 1956 Continental Mark II in light blue with a smart medium blue and white leather interior. As with all Mark IIs, it is equipped with power features including steering, brakes, and windows.
After passing among two other known owners, this Mark II was acquired by the consignor in 2007, who treated it to a comprehensive body-off mechanical and cosmetic restoration, completed by Mike Fennel Restorations in Santa Clarita, California, in its original color combination. As one of the finest restored Continental Mark IIs in existence, it was awarded First Place in its division at the 2015 Lincoln & Continental Owners Club Western National Meet in San Diego.
In 1956, the Continental Mark II was the epitome of American luxury. Today, this exceptional Continental stands as a testament to the company that dared to build it 60 years ago.
