*Please note that this car is titled 1959.
According to a copy of its original Mercedes-Benz Delivery Notice dated June 3, 1959, this 300 SL Roadster was an original US-specification example ordered by IMA, the Belgian Mercedes-Benz importer. Original equipment included back-up lights, sealed- beam headlamps, Michelin tires, and a Becker Mexico radio. During its earlier history, a Mercedes-Benz factory-supplied replacement engine, numbered 198.010.1097150, replaced the original unit.
During 2000 and at just 24,151 km showing on the odometer, noted restorers Paul Russell and Company of Essex, Massachusetts, completely rebuilt the engine. Other work performed by the revered restorers at the time included rebuilding of the fuel injection pump, generator, starter, and water pump. Additionally, the fuel tank, along with its associated hoses and fuel pump, were restored, as was the radiator, while the coolant hoses were replaced. Other items of note include the installation of a new oil tank, the fitting of an all-new wiring harness, and the rebuilding of the power brake booster. Receipts totalling nearly $80,000 accompany the sale of the car.
Just under 1,200 additional kilometers have been travelled since this work. Handsomely finished in red with a tan interior, the 300 SL continues to benefit from an older restoration. Properly cared for and stored, it presents very well despite the passage of time. Most recently, the car received attention to the braking system and a tune-up.
Highly presentable and offered at auction complete with its Mercedes-Benz factory hardtop, convertible top, service records, plus copies of the original Mercedes-Benz data card, and Delivery Notice, this 300 SL Roadster is a very impressive and solid driver-quality example of this rare and storied breed. As such, it is certain to continue to provide an incredible open-air driving experience and myriad opportunities for its next caretaker to enjoy it on the most desirable classic rallies and touring events, where its still-impressive power, performance, and range will combine to provide a highly fitting and welcome entry.
