Over 365,000 Beetles were built worldwide between September 1956 and July 1957, and incorporated such recent improvements as tubeless tires, a redesigned steering wheel, allowing for a clearer view of the instruments, and an enlarged fuel tank, while export models featured the familiar dual chrome exhaust pipes. Starting at $1,495 for the sedan, the Sun Roof model was an additional $80; and for $1,995, open-top enthusiasts could opt for the cabriolet. A seemingly endless host of aftermarket accessories was available to fill most any desire or need; and today enthusiasm for the vintage Volkswagen continues in a cult-like atmosphere, with no two Beetles outfitted exactly alike by their proud owners.
This striking UK-market, right-hand-drive, oval-window Beetle is fitted with a Golde sliding sunroof, which was reduced slightly in size for the 1957 model year and is known as a “two-fold” version. Restored in the striking combination of black over red, the Beetle is accessorized with period wind deflectors for the side windows as well as a venetian-style blind in its oval rear window. The Volkswagen is beautifully presented with an immaculate engine bay and a detailed front compartment. Offered with a tool kit and period California yellow-and-black license plate, this international-market Beetle will surely delight its next fortunate owner.
