California Mille, 2012California Mille, 2014

The Volvo image has long been one of comfort, durability, and safety. However, motor sports enthusiasts know there is another key aspect to the Swedish marque: an impressive road rally history. Throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s, rallies around the world were dominated by gutsy Volvo PV544 two-door fastbacks. Performance-focused PV544s driven by renowned racers, including Gunnar Andersson, Art Riley, Bill Rutan, Jo Bonnier, and Tom Trana regularly competed and took firsts in the European Rally Championship, the Argentine road races, the East African Safari Rally, the Acropolis Rally, and other difficult events.

This PV544 reflects the spirit and character of those famous rally Volvos. The consignor reports he acquired this Volvo in 2009 and then made several improvements: The car’s power train was upgraded with a more powerful Volvo B18D engine and a synchromesh gearbox, sway bars were added to the front and rear suspension, and a second fuel tank was installed giving an extended driving range. Inside, air-conditioning was added along with cream and tan German square-weave carpeting. The exterior was then refinished in an attractive cream tone.

A notable tribute to the performance side of Volvo, this PV544 has successfully completed the 1,000-mile California Mille rally twice during the consignor’s ownership and promises to be at home at future rallies and on spirited weekend outings alike.
