Alfa Romeo intended the 2000 Spider to serve as a comfortable, long-distance touring car – a more luxurious companion to the contemporary Pinin Farina-bodied Giulietta Spider. Powered by an uprated 113 bhp twin-cam engine, with twin Solex carburetors and 8.5:1 compression ratio, the 2000 Spider also featured a slick five-speed gearbox, and graceful, high-quality coachwork by Touring of Milan. In total, Alfa Romeo built just 3,443 examples of the 2000 Spider before the updated, six-cylinder 2600 model was introduced for 1962.
The 2000 Spider offered here is a fascinating unrestored example recently discovered in long-term ownership. An original US-market model, identified by its unique bonnet scoop treatment and distinctive side trim, this Alfa Romeo is believed to have spent much of its existence in New York City. Finished in the attractive color combination of white with red upholstery, the Spider still retains its rare optional hardtop, Carrozzeria Touring body tag, and matching-numbers engine, as confirmed by the original data tag affixed to the firewall. Parked in static storage for the last decade, and not currently in running order, the Spider showed just 31,204 miles when cataloged.
Today, the Alfa Romeo appears to be an excellent candidate for restoration, as it appears to be unusually complete and sound, with important mechanical components, trim, and brightwork intact. In addition to its rare hardtop, the Spider is offered with an original Alfa Romeo toolbox, and a cache of spare parts including the original Solex carburetors and intake manifold assembly.
