Coachwork by Touring
The 102-Series 2000 Spider marked Alfa Romeo’s return to building a premium grand touring roadster reminiscent of its elegant prewar cabriolets. Bodied by Carrozzeria Touring, the Spider’s clean, minimally adorned coachwork has aged exceptionally well alongside contemporaries such as the Maserati 3500 and Lancia Flaminia.
The tipo 102 motor is an evolution of the cast-iron block, inline four-cylinder of the 1900-Series cars. Renowned for its reliability, the engine featured twin Solex carburetors and a more modern valve train, making for 115 hp. Coupled with a five-speed synchromesh gearbox and relaxed highway gearing, the 2000 Spider excelled at long-distance touring in comfort and style.
The car offered here is an attractive example formerly from a collection in the Southwest. The consignor states that within the last three years, it was treated to a high-quality, bare-metal respray in Cobalt Blue and a new interior in Alfa Red with contrasting wool carpets. New Borrani knock-off wire wheels and Michelin tires were fitted. The carburetors, fuel system, suspension, and brakes were all recently refreshed in anticipation of its rally use.
Accompanying the sale is a collection of 102-Series spare parts, including an extra engine and gearbox. Rarely seen, these Touring-bodied Spiders are a distinctive entry into any show or driving event, and the example here is a handsome thoroughbred that can be enjoyed by a new Alfa Romeo enthusiast.
