Coachwork by Ghia
Produced between 1958 and 1966, the festive Jolly was inspired by Fiat chair Gianni Agnelli and built by Ghia. While production estimates vary, only some 400 to 500 were built in all, with an estimated 100 survivors today.
In celebration of 20 years of marriage in 1960, former US ambassador and White House Chief of Protocol Wiley T. Buchanan and his wife, Mrs. Ruth Buchanan, purchased this 600 Jolly in Washington, D.C. Built in white, but repainted coral before delivery, the Jolly was immediately sent by the Buchanans to “Beaulieu,” their seaside mansion on Newport’s prestigious Cliff Walk. Over the next 55 years, the Jolly has been used only to drive from Beaulieu to Bailey’s Beach Club and back. Consequently, it has less than 5,000 miles of use. Never substantially altered with the exception of the replacement of its fringed Surrey canopy, this wonderful Jolly is a remarkable survivor.
Now offered from loving single ownership, this well-maintained Jolly was recently and thoroughly sorted by the Boston Sportscar Company of Weston, Massachusetts. The work performed included a tune-up and replacement of hoses and brake pads. Predictably, the Jolly’s state of preservation evoked astonishment. Offered for sale for the very first time, this highly original, never-restored, one-owner Jolly will certainly continue to enchant all fortunate enough to experience its many joys first hand.
