This 1960 Maserati 3500 GT coupe, chassis AM101708, is a wonderfully preserved example of one of Maserati’s most celebrated postwar GT models with fascinating original specification, unbroken provenance, and excellent documentation. Its story begins on November 17, 1959, when Californian Maserati aficionado Stanley W. Good Jr. placed his order for the vehicle directly with Maserati S.p.A. while staying at the Hotel Hassler in Rome. In addition to three Weber carburetors, front disc brakes, Borrani disc-type wheels, manual gearbox, seat belts, and Smiths instruments, the car was ordered without rear-quarter windows for an exceptionally clean appearance. Mr. Good also submitted a handwritten letter to Maserati, specifying the car’s paint color be changed from Grigio Fumo (Smoke Gray) to Grigio Nembo (Nimbus Gray). The interior was trimmed in Neutra (Neutral) Connolly leather. Following construction in December 1959, the Maserati was shipped to San Francisco on the S.S. President Hayes, arriving on February 16, 1960.

After a short time, Mr. Good sold the Maserati to fellow San Francisco resident Dr. Henry C. Portalupi, through whom it passed on April 20, 1962, to Mitchel L. Mitchell, also of the same city. Reportedly, the car only had 3,000 indicated miles at the time of purchase. Mileage during Mr. Mitchell’s ownership is progressively documented by parts orders and service receipts until May 1978 at 36,650 miles, after which it remained unused until his passing in April 1987.

On December 24, 1987, the car passed to Mr. Mitchell’s daughter Gladyne, a prominent San Francisco socialite, who stored it in her carriage house until 1997 when it was delivered to her nephew Tony and kept at his Napa Valley winery and occasionally driven for the next 13 years. In 2010, Gladyne Mitchell had Tony Mitchell remove the car and prepare it for sale. Noted Maserati collector Francis Mandarano acquired the 3500 GT in 2010, and following brake and fuel-system service, entered the car in the 2012 Monte Shelton Northwest Classic Rally, completing the 1,000-mile event without fault. Next, the Maserati was accepted into the Preservation Class at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance® and participated in the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance®.

As now offered, this special Maserati 3500 GT remains exceptionally original, including the original paint finish and leather interior, with only an approximate 41,500 miles from new. Retaining its matching-numbers engine per its certificate of origin, it comes to auction with outstanding documentation including the comprehensive Maserati Classiche document package confirming original details, plus correspondence, manuals, and an original Maserati parts book.

Steeped in fascinating history, this elegant 1960 Maserati 3500 GT Coupe is an extremely engaging example of one of the finest postwar Italian grand touring cars ever built.
