The ultimate expressions of the renowned W128 Ponton series, the Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Coupe and Cabriolet made their debuts in 1958 and 1959, respectively. Produced through October 1960, they exuded continental flair with clean styling and exquisite hand-built interiors. Just 1,942 were built, including 1,112 Cabriolets. Priced at $8,091 new, the glamorous 220 SE Cabriolet remains coveted for its technical sophistication, including fuel injection, a synchronized four-speed gearbox, and independent suspension. Impeccable build quality and the Cabriolet’s smoothness of line with the top down remain other enduring virtues of this elegant model.
Offered in exemplary condition throughout, this 1960 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet was acquired by the consignor with a quality older restoration in 2012. Since then, it has received comprehensive cosmetic and mechanical care, elevating it to truly outstanding form. The brightwork was replated; the new leather upholstery, carpeting, and convertible top were expertly fitted and colors were selected to complement the exterior; and the interior woodwork was beautifully restored as well. The instruments and accessories received similar care for proper operation. Mechanical systems were reviewed and optimized, including a cylinder-head rebuild, followed by testing on a chassis dynamometer. Offered complete with receipts for all work performed under the consignor’s stewardship, this rare Mercedes-Benz Cabriolet is virtually impeccable and ready to show, tour, and enjoy.
