1960 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet

In September 1958, Mercedes-Benz updated the 220 S model with a fuel-injected engine, resulting in the 220 SE. Available in sedan, coupe, and cabriolet body styles through late 1960, the W128-based model was the final development of the so-called Ponton platform. This beautifully restored 220 SE is one of 1,112 cabriolets built. Chassis 003228 was originally equipped with a fold-down rear seat and instruments in miles, and finished in black paint over an interior of cream white leather. During the 1990s, the Mercedes- Benz was owned by Bill Clippinger of Los Angeles, and he may be responsible for the transmission’s unusual modification to a floor-shifter.

Marque expert Scott Melnick freshened the matching-numbers 220 SE prior to its acquisition in September 2011 by Frank Darabont, the Academy Award-nominated writer/director at the helm of such film classics as The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. In more recent years, he created the wildly popular television version of The Walking Dead.

During Mr. Darabont’s ownership, the 220 SE has experienced gentle use while being serviced as needed by Mr. Melnick. The car currently features an attractive period-correct color scheme of burgundy paint over a tan leather interior with a matching soft top, and is accompanied by a Becker Mexico radio. This 220 SE constitutes a splendid example of the final open Ponton that would be ideal for marque enthusiasts and ardent film buffs alike.
