During the 1950s, Mercedes-Benz swiftly re-established itself as one of the world’s top automobile manufacturers with models ranging from the economical to the luxurious. Exemplifying the latter, the fuel-injected 220 SE debuted in September 1958 and, starting in October 1959, was available only as a coupe and glamorous cabriolet, priced from $8,091. Hand built at Sindelfingen works to impeccable standards with interiors featuring rich leather upholstery and hand-rubbed wood grain accents, the 220 SE was an exclusive, top-of-the-line model with just 1,112 cabriolets and 830 coupes built.
This attractive 1960 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet benefits from long-term collector ownership and care. Following a complete restoration, it earned First Place awards at several California concours venues, including Le Cercle, Santa Barbara, and San Diego, plus Best of Show at the Arizona Governor’s Cup Rally – all during 1991. As offered, the Mercedes-Benz remains visually striking throughout, featuring maroon paint, a beige canvas top, and matching leather upholstery with smart maroon piping. Fully restored wooden interior trim provides a wonderful accent. In addition to its robust power train, which includes a synchromesh four-speed manual gearbox, this highly desirable 220 SE includes a dash-mounted clock and radio. Post-restoration use has been limited with an indicated 110 miles at the time of cataloguing and the owner’s manual, a mounted spare tire, roadside jack, and tools are included with this exceedingly desirable classic Mercedes-Benz.
