The Volkswagen 23-Window Deluxe is widely considered the most soughtafter of all Microbuses. Stunningly restored, this 1960 model is a brilliant example of Volkswagen’s beloved split-window design. According to its COA, this Sealing Wax Red and Beige Gray Deluxe Microbus was built on August 5, 1960, and designated for “USA Tourist Delivery.” Equipped with a rare combination of options and likely special-ordered, it was fitted with an Eberspächer gas heater and “ambulance step” at its cargo doors. Also listed is option M 379, which a Volkswagen expert states likely refers to front Safari windows. As a 1960 model, the bus also features the desirable early taillights and turn signals.
Purchased from a Volkswagen collector’s warehouse, this bus was treated to a concours-quality restoration. According to the consignor, its metalwork was entrusted to specialist Chris Ashworth in Orange, California. Octavio’s VW Restoration, known for its exacting work, completed the impressive paint, interior, detail finishes, and assembly, while Rafael Gutierrez, a noted Volkswagen specialist, also in Orange, completed the mechanicals.
The outcome of this five-year endeavor is astonishing. The Sigla glass, German square-weave carpet, upholstery, and finishes are all period-correct, with attention paid to the finest of details. This sensational nine-passenger, 23-window Microbus would be ideal for family outings, Volkswagen shows, and carefree weekend driving.
