Introduced at Frankfurt in 1959, Porsche’s 356 B launched the new T-5 body and many subtle refinements. Open models included the Drauz-built Roadster, with just 2,653 T-5 examples produced. An important development in Porsche history, the 356 B – in both Roadster form and Super specification, exemplified by the car offered here – remains immensely desirable.
Numbered 88316 and accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this 356 B Roadster is a high-specification example featuring the Super engine configuration and factory-finished in Slate Grey over Light Grey leatherette. Restored some 25 years ago yet continuing to present very nicely with an inviting, gentle patina, and approximately 2,000 miles traveled over the past 20 years, it is a high-level driver featuring very good panel gaps and fit, with paint, upholstery, weather gear, glass, and bright trim in similar order.
While not original to the car, the engine is indeed a period-correct 1961 1600S (616/2) and close in sequence to the original unit. The chrome wheels are of aftermarket type for the car, measuring 4½" wide. The engine and the Porsche’s other mechanical systems have been carefully maintained, and as expected, this 356 B Super Roadster is reported to deliver a highly enjoyable experience with a delightfully tight feel in the finest Porsche tradition.
