The 250 GTE was the first Ferrari to be developed using a wind tunnel – indicating that while it was meant for the road, it had roots planted in the high-performance world. Elegantly styled by coachbuilder Pininfarina with a steel body, aluminum doors, hood, and trunk, the 250 GTE was capable of comfortably accommodating four passengers in its luxurious Connolly leather interior.
Ferrari built 954 examples of the 250 GTE between October 1960 and late 1963. This example, chassis 3929 GT, was the 578th completed, and was sold to Enrico Bergoglio on January 5, 1963. In June 1963, it changed ownership and was re-registered with Torino plate number TO 604463 – the same plate that it wears today. The third owner of the car relocated from Torino to Golden, Colorado, to attend the Colorado School of Mines. After enjoying the performance of his Ferrari on the roads of the western US for almost a decade, he listed the car for sale and sold it soon thereafter, in the mid-1970s.
Three decades later, a Colorado Springs man heard that a nearby resident might own a vintage sports car that had not been seen for decades. The man knocked on that individual’s door and asked whether he could see the vehicle. To his surprise, in a dusty, sagging garage, he found this 250 GTE, showing just under 100,000 km. The man who had purchased it in the 1970s said he had used the Ferrari for a short time before parking it in his parents’ garage, and that he had started it several times a year for most of his ownership.
Once the 250 GTE was rescued from that unassuming residential garage, the current owner enlisted Ferrari mechanic Bill Evensen at Maranello Motorworks in Northglenn, Colorado, to perform a comprehensive mechanical service. Since the work was completed, the 250 GTE has been driven less than 160 km. All paint is believed to be original except around the driving lights; according to the consignor’s research, this 250 GTE was upgraded to the more modern series III lights in period. The interior has been refreshed by new carpeting and pristinely reupholstered seats in Italian leather.
Included in the sale are the export papers used to ship the car from Torino to the US, as well as early service records from Maranello Motorworks, a sales brochure, original owner’s manual (with pouch), tool kit, and period Italian Shell oil cans. This 250 GTE is a survivor that is in remarkable condition and serves as an impressive example of one of Ferrari’s most admired road cars.
