According to a copy of its Kardex, this award-winning Carrera 2 Sunroof Coupe was first sold to Jean Zuberer of Geneva, Switzerland. The Porsche eventually migrated to California, where it was retired from its on-road duties and was stored. Around 2000, the 356 was purchased by Neil Goldberg of Troy, Michigan, a dedicated 356 enthusiast and talented craftsman. With the support of other Porsche specialists, he performed an exacting nut-and-bolt restoration that returned the Carrera to extraordinary condition.
During the meticulous restoration of the bodywork, Goldberg had the engine sent to specialist Bill Doyle of Rennwagen Motor Company, one of the foremost experts in Porsche four-cam engines. Although it is not known when, the Carrera’s original engine had been replaced at some point with the current unit worked on by Doyle, a correct plain-bearing engine with a number very close to the original. After final detailing, the Carrera 2 was shown at the Porsche Parade in 2001, where it received the People’s Choice Award.
Eventually, noted Porsche collector David Decker purchased the 356 and enjoyed it for a number of years before selling it to Barry Konier, in whose care it was regularly driven and displayed. This Porsche reportedly garnered a First in Class award at the Newport Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2007, another first at the Corona del Mar Concours in 2008, and a class award at the Los Angeles Concours d’Elegance.
The stunning Carrera is currently finished in the wonderful period-correct color of Smyrna Green, with the cockpit finished in complementing light green upholstery. In January 2017, respected four-cam expert Jeff Adams of Speedsport Tuning in Danbury, Connecticut, completed a thorough inspection. In his report he states that the Carrera features its correct annular disc brakes, original-style oil lines and connectors, breather hoses with factory clamps, and ignition boxes. He also noted the Carrera has been fitted with a factory Carrera 2 GT exhaust and fuel tank, and a host of other desirable upgrades. His report confirmed the body, paint, and interior remain in excellent condition and that the car runs and drives well.
This lovely Carrera 2 is fitted with Marchal driving lights, wood-rimmed steering wheel with deluxe horn ring, and rare original factory electric sunroof. Speedster seats have been fitted as they offer better lateral support.
Accompanied by a copy of both the Kardex and Certificate of Authenticity, and a report by Jeff Adams, a Carrera 2 prepared to this level does not often come to market. With its award-winning restoration and engine work by Bill Doyle, this 356 Carrera 2 is an extraordinary example. A high-performance 356 firmly rooted in Porsche’s motorsports program, it will be equally at home on the open road or at prestigious concours d’elegance.
