In October 1964, Ferrari introduced the 275 GTS, an open grand touring car that wore elegant Pininfarina coachwork and featured a 3.3-liter V-12 engine, a five-speed transaxle, fully independent suspension, and four-wheel disc brakes. The beautiful, late-production 275 GTS offered here benefits from a well-documented provenance that has culminated in a 16-year period of fastidious care by the current owner.
Among the last 30 of just 200 examples built, this 275 GTS, chassis 07957, was completed in December 1965, finished in Grigio Fumo (Smoke Gray) complemented by red leather upholstery. Destined for the US market, the spider was sold in early 1966 to Ferrari’s official North American distributor Luigi Chinetti Motors in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Reportedly sold new to a Texas-based owner, the 275 GTS remained in the Lone Star State until late 1982, held by a series of owners and consistently maintained by Sid Simpson, a well-regarded Ferrari specialist in Houston. A substantial file of service records indicates that by 1972, the 275 GTS was owned by Richard Miller of Dallas, and by July 1974, it had passed to fellow Dallas resident Michael Kahn.
By May 1976, the Ferrari had been acquired by Charles Nearburg, a petroleum exploration executive who later successfully raced on professional circuits, including the Champ Car series and in the 1997 24 Hours of Le Mans. A resident of Dallas, Mr. Nearburg is also an internationally respected collector with a stable of significant sports and racing cars.
Mr. Nearburg enjoyed the Ferrari for a few years before it passed to Dan Van Winkle of Houston in April 1982. By the end of that year, 07957 was sold to Dr. Emil Partak, a dentist living in San Jose, California, and he maintained the Ferrari superbly over the following 19 years. During his ownership, the Ferrari was regularly serviced and benefited from much mechanical attention, as is documented by a collection of invoices on file.
In November 2001, Dr. Partak sold the Ferrari to Ralph Furra of Newport Beach, California, and he displayed the car at the FCA National Meet and Concours in Los Angeles in May 2002. Mr. Furra retained possession for only a year before selling the car in December 2002 to the current owner, a Southern California-based enthusiast who maintains a collection of high-quality sports cars that are enjoyed in both touring and concours events.
The consignor began displaying the Ferrari locally with an appearance at the Newport Coast Concours d’Elegance in Irvine, California, in October 2003. In August 2004, he presented the spider at the FCA International Meet and Concours at Monterey, and based on feedback from judges he began to correct minor issues, continually striving to bring the car to “platinum” standards. To this end, he commissioned substantial work by Classic European Restorations in Oceanside, California, including a bare-metal refinish in silver paint and a re-trimming of the upholstery in proper red leather.
The consignor’s painstaking efforts were duly rewarded in April 2013 when the 275 GTS received a Platinum Award at the Concorso Ferrari in Pasadena, California, an impressive feat the car repeated at the most recent edition of the event held in April 2018. Furthermore, this Ferrari has also participated in the Copperstate 1000 in 2004 and garnered numerous class awards at smaller shows over the ensuing years. Most significantly, 07957 was issued a Ferrari Classiche Red Book attesting to the presence of all the major original mechanical components, including the matching-numbers V-12 engine and transaxle.
Accompanied by a proper set of owner’s manuals in the original leather folio and a tool kit, and documented by a Marcel Massini report – as well as an impressive file of service records dating to 1972 – this rare and beautifully presented 275 GTS may be enjoyed for its exhilarating open-air performance or treated to an opportunity for further acclaim at FCA meets and other prestigious concours d’elegance.
