The 330 GT 2+2 presented here is one of the most original and charismatic examples to appear at auction in many years.

Constructed in 1966, 8787 incorporated the many mechanical and detail refinements introduced throughout the 330 GT production run and was generously optioned with power windows, power steering, Borrani wire wheels, and York air-conditioning. Destined for the North American market, this elegant Ferrari was originally finished in the attractive color scheme of Argento (silver) with black leather upholstery and contrasting red carpets.

According to the 330 GT Registry, 8787 was imported to the US through Luigi Chinetti Motors of Greenwich, Connecticut, and first offered for sale by West Coast distributor Modern Classic Motors of Reno, Nevada.

Notably, the Ferrari’s first recorded owner was pioneering sports car enthusiast Denver B. Cornett Jr. of Louisville, Kentucky. One of the first Kentucky car dealers to specialize in imported exotics, Mr. Cornett was an instrumental figure in the formative years of the US sports car movement. Early in his career, Mr. Cornett participated in the inaugural Watkins Glen Grand Prix, founded the Kentucky region of the Sports Car Club of America and was an active member of many local and national car clubs. By the late 1950s, Mr. Cornett had assembled an impressive stable of sports cars that included everything from a 300 SL Gullwing to the 24 Hours of Spa-winning 166 MM Barchetta.

Given his appreciation for fine automobiles, Mr. Cornett was undoubtedly attracted to the 330 GT’s rare combination of thoroughbred performance, understated Italian styling, and remarkable versatility. In May 1970, following three years of enjoyable motoring, Mr. Cornett traded his 7,000-mile Ferrari to Clarence C. Canada of Camden, South Carolina, for a tract of land in North Carolina and $3,000 cash.

Like Mr. Cornett, Mr. Canada was both a successful entrepreneur and avid car enthusiast. During the early years of his ownership, Mr. Canada drove the 330 GT to the leading sports car race venues – from Watkins Glen to Road Atlanta – and took part in prominent Ferrari gatherings including the 1973 FCA Annual Meet in Waterford Hills, Michigan.

Recently acquired from Mr. Canada after 43 years of devoted stewardship, 8787 stands today as a remarkable time capsule and an exceptionally original example of the ultimate 330 GT 2+2 variant. Having never received any significant restoration work, this Ferrari remains in virtually untouched condition inside and out. With its muted original paint, beautifully preserved interior, and original production number stampings visible, this 330 GT 2+2 possesses a delightful patina that has become a rare characteristic of 1960s Ferraris.

One of the most unusual features of this Ferrari is a small, 24-karat gold “SF” circular badge placed in the center of the hood, near the front leading edge. While its origins remain mysterious, this insignia has been affixed to the Ferrari throughout the entirety of Mr. Canada’s ownership and may have even been placed on the car when it was originally delivered in 1967.

Significantly, the sale of 8787 is offered with the original owner’s handbooks, warranty card, tool roll, and jack; as well as an extensive file of documentation that includes the 1970 Bill of Sale between Denver Cornett and C.C. Canada, period photos, service receipts, registration cards, and several paddock passes dating from the 1970s.
