The E-Type shocked the world upon its introduction in 1961, garnering positive accolades from all who witnessed the genius of Malcolm Sayer’s design firsthand. Enthusiasm for the model has hardly waned since, and the E-Type Roadster in particular has found a place in the vast majority of the world’s great collections.

While the earliest E-Types may be the purest expression of the design, their somewhat cramped ergonomics, antiquated gearbox, and fragile switchgear keep them from being the driver’s choice, that distinction going to the later 4.2-litre cars from 1965–67. Featuring revised interiors, more displacement, and a fully synchronized gearbox, while retaining most of the early car’s exterior panache, these models hit the sweet spot for motoring enthusiasts.

This sublime 1966 Roadster was sold new to Excel Electric Supply Co., in California, finished in desirable triple black with a factory hardtop. Following 40 years of storage by its second owner, the car was comprehensively restored to concours standards by the renowned specialist Shaun Saunders. All aspects of the Jaguar were attended to with an uncommon level of care, with deviations from original specification limited to a 3.31:1 final-drive ratio and new 72-spoke wire wheels. Purchased by the consignor in 2017, the Jaguar has since received fastidious care as part of his world-class collection of sports and classic cars.
