From the final year of Healey production, this car represents the ultimate variation of a range that had begun 14 years earlier with the 100/4 Roadster. The Mk III BJ8 boasts the most luxurious interior ever seen in an Austin-Healey, with wood trim for the dashboard and a center console with padded armrest. The appeal of the BJ8 isn’t limited to its appearance – it also has the most powerful engine fitted to a Healey, a 150 hp unit that pushed the car toward 120 mph.
According to a previous owner, this BJ8 was delivered new in Texas and remained in the same family for nearly 40 years. In 2007, a new owner commissioned a restoration on what was then an exceptionally straight and solid car. Completed in 2010, the extensive and correct work included a thorough respray, chrome replating, and a refreshing of the interior in proper materials. A new top completed the cosmetics.
The engine was rebuilt and the ancillary systems were either rebuilt or replaced. Inspection of the car shows the quality of the work performed and the excellent panel fit is evidence that great care has been taken with the doors, bonnet, and boot lids. The BJ8 presents as ready for showing or active touring.
The unmistakable appeal of Donald Healey’s inspiration has captivated enthusiasts across the world for almost 60 years, and this Austin-Healey Mk III BJ8 is a lovely example of the respected Healey reputation.
