In 1968, the hugely popular Shelby Mustang continued to be offered in fastback and convertible forms, and the new J-code 302 cid V-8 engine was also introduced. The bellicose styling was underlined with Shelby 10-spoke aluminum wheels, a redefined nose, Lucas lights set into the grille, and reworked scoops and louvers in the fiberglass hood. Only 404 GT350 convertibles were built in 1968, which accounts for less than 10% of total production.
The provenance and maintenance of this outstanding Shelby is documented in a substantial dossier. Completed on February 8, 1968, the two-door Convertible left the factory in Lime Green with a black interior, optioned with air-conditioning, power steering and brakes, a tilt-away steering column, and dual exhaust. It was retailed by the Theodore Robins Ford dealership in Costa Mesa, California, to Mr. R.E. Renz of West Covina, California, who kept it for two decades. Over the years, Mr. Renz commissioned a couple of color changes and an engine and transmission rebuild, with maintenance by his own mechanical shop. The Shelby was then owned by further enthusiasts in California, each adding to the tome of service receipts, before passing to the consignor.
With a top speed of 140 mph and the aggressive persona innate to the Shelby lineup, this dramatic triple-black GT350 Convertible is one of a small production run in 1968 and comes with substantial historical documentation. It is poised to continue to thrill in inimitable Shelby style.
