This superb example of Lamborghini’s iconic Miura is the recipient of a recent restoration of exceptional quality, resulting in an exquisite car with numerous mechanical upgrades. One of only about 760 Miuras built, and one of just 140 P400 S examples, this beautiful Lamborghini showcases the most sophisticated sports car engineering of its day.
According to the International Lamborghini Registry, chassis no. 3982 was completed on March 12, 1969, the 346th Miura built. Finished in Giallo Flay (Fly Yellow) paint and trimmed with a beige and black interior, the car was dispatched to dealer Gerini Maiocchi for retail. While this Miura’s interim history is currently unknown, by 2002 the car was offered on consignment through British Motor Car Distributors of San Francisco.
Acquired in 2003 by a Missouri-based enthusiast, the car was sold in September 2005 to a Maryland-based collector. Recognizing the potential of the highly original and little-used Miura, the collector soon retained DEW Motorcars of Sterling, Virginia, to conduct a comprehensive mechanical rebuild and exterior cosmetic refurbishment that took nearly four years to complete. DEW Motorcars is renowned for their expertise in early Lamborghini restorations and their work on 3982 was exceptional.
The engine was completely disassembled, and meticulously rebuilt and refinished. Taking advantage of the disassembly of the major mechanical components, the collector opted to pursue a number of upgrades, in some cases matching the specifications of later Miura examples. Chief among these was an upgrade to the superior, split-sump lubrication system for the engine and transmission. This upgrade, commonly undertaken by early Miura owners, helps ensure that the superbly rebuilt V-12 will pull reliably for many miles of enjoyable use.
The rear suspension was upgraded to the competition design of Bob Wallace, the Lamborghini factory driver famed for creating the P400 Jota. New original-stock front and rear springs, often exceedingly difficult to locate, were acquired and installed. Further improvements included the addition of an electronic ignition, a Kevlar clutch, tuning upgrades to the Weber carburetors, a fuel recirculation bypass, cam oilers to the primary gears, a new aluminum fuel tank, and re-coring of the radiator. After thorough dynamometer testing and recalibration, the rebuilt engine and transaxle were reinstalled, and this astounding Miura’s drivetrain was refreshed to better-than-new condition.
Following this considerable investment, detailed by photographs and a stack of receipts nearly a foot thick, the comprehensive restoration was completed in May 2010, after which 3982 stood poised for enjoyment. The Miura was driven occasionally, tallying approximately 3,000 miles over the following two years, every mile revealing the V-12’s robust performance and characteristic sound. The car has been dutifully stored and serviced as needed, and was returned to DEW Motorcars last year for a fluid change, flush of the brake and clutch systems, and a complete detailing.
Displaying less than 30,000 miles at the time of cataloguing, this sensational Miura drives as beautifully as it looks. A recent outing revealed this Miura to be very well tuned, exhibiting the solid feel and outstanding road manners typical of an expert restoration. From the performance of the original V-12 motor to the sublime paint finish and radically styled Campagnolo cast magnesium wheels, 3982 is a thoughtfully upgraded and gorgeous example of the legendary Lamborghini Miura.
