After decades of racing and engineering refinement, Mercedes-Benz evolved into a prolific luxury brand, exporting exciting production series cars and earning new and dedicated North American customers. Introduced in late 1961, the clean, elegant, and largely handmade W111 280 SE Cabriolet appealed to upscale customers seeking quality workmanship, bespoke accessories, and open motoring pleasure.
This handsome cabriolet was ordered new in 1969 with automatic transmission and air-conditioning and delivered to McNey Motors in Bethesda, Maryland. The 280 SE was retained by the original owners, residing entirely in Bethesda under the care of the family patriarch, from 1969 through the early 1990s. In 1992, his son inherited the car and proudly maintained it, including giving it a repaint in the original factory color in 2001. Throughout the family’s ownership, which ended just last year, the elegant Mercedes-Benz was properly maintained and serviced as needed, accumulating just 85,000 documented miles.
Recent comprehensive maintenance includes new engine and transmission mounts, driveshaft flex joints, new fuel-pump mounts, front shock absorbers, and a new battery. The factory owner’s manual and detailed records accompany the car. These highly sought 280 SE Cabriolets are a welcome offering to the collector who seeks motoring pleasure, comfort, and prestige in a very driveable, open, modern classic.
