Coming at the end of a long and distinguished line of front-engine V-12 grand touring coupes, the Daytona more than delivered on Ferrari’s established formula of stunning looks and terrific performance. For most, if not all, of its production run, it was considered the fastest car in the world by top speed. This example is distinguished by excellent, contiguous provenance, a strong color combination, desirable options, and proven driveability.

Officially known as the 365 GTB, Ferrari was swift to capitalize upon its win in the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona, nicknaming its newest top-of-the-line V-12 grand tourer the Daytona. The moniker embodied the Ferrari mystique: race-bred performance more than equal to anything else on the road, and social status associated with an appreciation for the finest in design and craftsmanship.

This car, chassis 16447, was completed on March 9, 1973, finished in Argento Metallizzato (Metallic Silver) with Nero (Black) Connolly leather upholstery and dispatched from Maranello to Chinetti-Garthwaite Imports in Pennsylvania. Built as a US-specification export model, the car was factory-equipped with pop-up headlamps and an external side-view mirror. Desirable features included air-conditioning and power windows.

Algar Ferrari of Philadelphia sold this Daytona new to Robert P. Minnick of Buffalo, New York; in 1976, he advertised it for sale with a custom stereo and 10,000 miles on the odometer. The Daytona’s next 28 years were spent with two long-term owners in New York and Ohio, with an approximate 37,500 miles accrued in total. Subsequent owners based in Colorado and California maintained 16447 in fine condition, as attested to by a 2005 appraisal included in the documentation.

In 2010, well-known enthusiast Wayne Carini purchased the Daytona and returned it to the original Metallic Silver livery with a bare-metal repaint. In early 2012, the Daytona was acquired by an Arizona-based collector, who enjoyed it on classic touring events, including the Going to the Sun Rally in Montana and the 2013 Copperstate 1000. Around this time, electric power steering was installed, and the transaxle was rebuilt as part of comprehensive maintenance that included the braking, charging, cooling, fuel, instrumentation, and starting systems. The current owner acquired this Daytona in 2015, and since then it has been domiciled in the UK.

A recent minor service by UK-based Ferrari specialist Shiltech included a compression test that revealed all 12 cylinders at between 124 and 134 psi. Accompanied by a Massini report, the original sale paperwork, original owner’s manuals, and tool kit, this well-kept Daytona offers fabulous driveability, excellent provenance, desirable options, and a great color combination, making it a notable opportunity not to be missed.
