The universally admired and once ubiquitous Fiat 124 Spider stands as one of the company’s most successful exports, existing in several iterations from 1966 to 1985, with nearly 173,000 built in all. The car was wildly successful in the US market thanks to its thoroughly modern and sporting Tom Tjaarda-designed Pininfarina coachwork, sprightly performance, and user-friendly demeanor. Decades of inevitable attrition have now shone a spotlight on the surviving examples in the hands of enthusiasts around the world.
This outstanding 1974-built example was among the first to receive the uprated 1,756 cc, 116 hp inline twin-cam four-cylinder engine. The consignor entrusted the Fiat, which was determined to be a very good candidate for a high-level preservation effort, to renowned restorer Joseph DeMeo of Southern California. What followed was a high-level recommissioning of the Spider’s cosmetics and mechanical systems where necessary. Replating of brake lines, exhaust, suspension, and braking components were just the beginning of the work. A new Stayfast canvas top in dark blue was installed, the instruments were cleaned and polished, and the interior wood veneers were replaced by color-matched, solid beech panels finished to a high luster. The engine compartment was also thoroughly cleaned, which highlights its myriad details.
The result of this effort has produced a 124 Sport Spider that most any collector would be proud to own, drive, and display alongside sports cars worth dozens of times its value. Offered with its manuals, tool set, jack, and numerous spare parts, this pampered Fiat would surely be welcome at local shows, and your close inspection is encouraged.
