Coachwork by Karmann
*Please note that this vehicle’s current mileage is 411 miles.
Introduced in 1955, the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia combined distinctive Italian styling by Ghia, coachbuilt bodywork by Karmann of Osnabrück, Germany, and the robust yet economical mechanical components provided by the proven Volkswagen Type 1 “Beetle” chassis. Construction was rigorous, with extensive handwork throughout. Gloved hands scanned for subtle imperfections before bodies were dipped in zinc-phosphate primer, wetsanded, and then painted and hand-sanded four times for a top-quality finish, with water curtains inside Karmann’s paint booths eliminating dust. Designated Type 14, the Karmann Ghia was an immediate hit, and demand far surpassed expectations. US shipments commenced in 1956 and continued to late 1974.
This 1974 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe is an exceptionally well-preserved and original example with just 23 indicated miles. It was delivered new to Chick Iverson Volkswagen-Audi of Newport Beach, California, during September 1974, and sold there on April 29, 1975. Offered in amazing, virtually as-new condition, this late-production Karmann Ghia Coupe is finished in orange over brown, with a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio, and factory-specification Michelin XZX radial tires. Documentation includes the still-affixed window sticker, Bill of Sale, delivery and preparation schedule, dealer stock number tag, and complete original key set, plus owner’s manual and photocopies of the dealer invoice. As offered, this final-year 1974 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is a time capsule, as-delivered, 45-year-old example of a European coachbuilt delight.
