1974 Volkswagen Thing Acapulco Edition

The Volkswagen Type 181 off-road military vehicle was originally designed for the West German Army and manufactured by Volkswagen from 1968 through 1983. Known in the US as the Thing, its popularity was immediately apparent at dealerships across the country.

This charming example is an “Acapulco Edition” Thing, one of only about 400 built to commemorate the special Things that were supplied to the Las Brisas Resort in Acapulco, Mexico, sporting unique running boards, upholstery, paint themes, and a lovely striped surrey top. Restored between 2005 and 2006 with a full photographic record, this Acapulco Thing benefited from an engine rebuild, including an increase in capacity to 1,835 cc, and installation of twin carburetors. The previous owner, who purchased the Volkswagen in January 2010, immediately sent the Thing to renowned Willhoit Auto Restoration in Long Beach, California, which rebuilt the suspension, installed four-wheel disc brakes, and equipped it with new wheels and tires. The work totaled nearly $21,000, according to the invoice on file. Acquired by the consignor in 2015, this Thing has since been treated to further recent sorting and maintenance.

This fabulous Thing won First Place at the 2006 Wolfsburg West in Corona, California, and at the 2006 Things at the Classic in Irvine, California; it is accompanied by show placards from the events. Ready for new accolades or as an exhilarating runabout, this Thing is sure to charm all who encounter it.
