In 1972, Alfa Romeo unveiled a new model incorporating a rear-mounted transaxle and a De Dion rear axle. Because this architecture was reminiscent of the immortal Alfetta Grand Prix car, the new Series 116 was named in honor of the championship winner. While production initially started with a sedan version, in 1974 a two-door coupe dubbed the Alfetta GT was introduced. With the chassis’ superior weight distribution and coachwork designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Alfetta GT delivered equal parts performance and style, as epitomized by this wonderfully preserved two-liter example.

According to a certificate of authenticity from Alfa Romeo’s Centro Documentazione, chassis 0001227 was completed in December 1975 and originally retailed through Turner Motors in Sacramento. In May 1976, the Alfetta was sold to its first owner, a local resident named Mr. McCullough. The car passed to at least one interim owner during the 1990s, then to a noted San Francisco collector in 2005 before being acquired by the consignor.

Maintained in outstanding original condition, this Alfetta GT 2000 is said to retain all of its factory glass, trim, headlamp lenses, and decals, as well as a date-coded spare wheel. Currently displaying approximately 63,000 miles, this well-preserved Alfetta is accompanied by its original owner’s manuals and tool kit. An appealing Italian performance car, this Alfetta GT 2000 is surely among tomorrow’s future classics.
