From a Private Maserati Collection

The tipo 120 Maserati Khamsin, named after an Egyptian desert wind, made its debut at the 1973 Geneva Auto Show. A replacement for the Indy, the front-engine GT featured Maserati’s four-cam V-8, 2+2 seating, and distinctive styling. Penned by Marcello Gandini of Bertone, the Khamsin’s angular lines contained a plethora of interesting details such as a vertical glass rear panel for increased visibility. A well-appointed interior afforded generous space for the driver and front passenger, with ample luggage space behind. The hydraulically assisted variable-ratio steering was borrowed from the Citroën SM, as were the brakes, clutch, retractable headlights, and driver-seat adjustment. Of the 421 examples built between 1974 and 1982, 155 were imported into the US.

This Khamsin, a matching-numbers example per classiche documentation, was cosmetically and mechanically restored from 2006 to 2008. Refinished in Rosso Cordoba metallic over a tan leather interior, a conversion to the attractive European bumper and “floating” taillight arrangement that Gandini originally intended was also carried out. Equipped with the desirable five-speed manual gearbox, the Khamsin has been maintained for the past three years in the current owner’s private collection and has had recent attention paid to its hydraulic system.

Displaying less than 36,000 miles, this understated and rare Khamsin would surely be a wonderful acquisition for the enthusiast looking to enjoy Italian motoring with the entire family.
