Following Porsche’s domination of the Can-Am racing series in 1972 and 1973, the German automaker used its experience with turbocharging technology gained through motor sports to enhance its production sports cars. Introduced by Porsche at the October 1974 Paris motor show, the 930 Turbo surprised attendees with its impressive performance statistics and race-bred looks.
Available for sale in the spring of 1975 in Europe, the first 930 models came to the US by 1976. While the earliest cars were fitted with a three-liter turbocharged flat-six, the first significant model upgrades arrived in 1978. The principal changes were a gain in displacement from 3.0 liters to 3.3 liters and the addition of an air-to-air intercooler which brought up output in the US-specification trim to 265 hp at 5,550 rpm and 282 lbs./ft. at 4,000 rpm. The improvements were clear, with 0–60 mph in 5.4 seconds, the quarter-mile in 13.5 seconds, and a terminal velocity of 162 mph was quoted. Externally, the rear “whale tail” spoiler was redesigned to accommodate the new intercooler. The brakes were also upgraded – four-piston calipers with ventilated discs – while the suspension benefited from new, heftier anti-roll bars, firmer shock absorbers, and larger diameter rear torsion bars.
In August 1979, Car and Driver magazine wrote of the revised model, “The Porsche 930 has pretty much established its own rules and called its own shots since Day One. Porsche’s continuing policy of constant improvement has…done [its] part to kick the duffs of the competition harder than ever before.”
One of 806 US-spec models built in 1979, this Porsche 930 is understood to have been sold new to a prominent collector through Trans World Motors Ltd. of Goleta, California, in July 1980. Finished in black over black leather interior, this 930 was equipped with desirable factory options such as sport seats, electric sliding roof, heated outside mirror, limited-slip differential, and California emissions for a total MSRP of $44,775.
Registering an incredible 38 miles on its odometer, this 930 is perhaps the lowest-mileage example extant. Presented in commensurately outstanding condition and remaining factory correct, this car was purchased into another private collection in 2016. Subsequently inspected by a marque specialist, this 930 received a service and fluid change and had its gas tank and battery replaced due to age.
The Porsche 930 is one of those rare, milestone cars whose legacy will live forever in the history books. The arrival of this time-warp example – accompanied by its original delivery items including books, tools, jack, spare, tire inflator, window sticker, original battery, and an accessory kit still in its factory bag – at auction is truly an occasion not to be missed.
