Launched in mid-1989 and announced as having 85% new content, the first “modern” Porsche 911 model line was designated Type 964. While outwardly quite similar to the venerable 911 design that served so well from 1974 to 1989, the new 964 offered a more refined drive, the result of numerous important updates. Included were coil-spring suspension, power steering, anti-lock brakes, an automatic rear spoiler, improved aerodynamics, standard driver and passenger air bags (for US cars), and an optional automatic transmission. The time-honored rear-mounted flat six-cylinder engine grew to 3.6 liters and delivered nearly 250 hp.

The Carrera 4, the first of the new 964 line released to the press and public, also featured 959-derived all-wheel drive, another first for this model. Delivering additional traction in wet conditions and more forgiving handling, the Carrera 4 was available only with a five-speed gearbox and 16" wheels.

This first-year example was acquired by the consignor in 2014, and at the time of cataloguing, showed just under 48,000 miles. Finished in Guards Red over black leather, this 964 is well-maintained and attractive. Amenities include air-conditioning, power windows, and a period Alpine stereo unit with trunkmounted amplifier. Factory books remain in their original pouch. Benefiting from Porsche’s racing technology applied to its road cars, this 1989 Porsche 964 Carrera 4 is primed for much enjoyment by its fortunate next owner.
