The Porsche 964 was the final 911 design completed under Tony Lapine’s direction and is acclaimed by many as his finest effort. The most desirable 964 was the Turbo 3.6, which posted a 0-60 time of four seconds and could reach a top speed of 174 mph. A mere 288 were imported into the US in 1994, including this example, which is elegantly finished in black with tan leather interior.
In all, 1,436 Turbo 3.6s were built worldwide in 1993 and 1994, and they were collectible from the beginning. This 964 has impeccable provenance, and was driven less than 20,000 miles by three owners before being acquired by the consignor in 2015.
The Porsche 911 was radically overhauled in 1990, and the rear torsion bars were replaced by tubular shocks and coil springs. The engine was increased to 3,605 cc capable of 247 bhp, retaining Bosch Motronic injection with hydraulic timing chain tensioners. The first 964 Turbo arrived in 1991 with 320 bhp and a five-speed transaxle. In 1993, that 3.3-liter version was replaced by the hair-raising M30/50 3.6-liter, 355 bhp model, which is presented here.
Improved injection, new camshafts and single KKK turbocharger delivered 384 lbs./ft. of torque at only 4,200 rpm. The Turbo 3.6 was fitted with red Brembo calipers for the first time – and the brakes could deliver 1.2 g of deceleration on demand.
This beautiful black 964 Turbo 3.6 was completed on September 30, 1993. According to an accompanying CARFAX report, it initially was registered in the Chicago suburb of Park Ridge on May 25, 1994. The first owner kept the Porsche until October 2002, covering just under 20,000 miles in eight years. Two subsequent owners stored the Turbo until it was sold to the consignor, a Georgia-based Porsche enthusiast, in April 2015, still showing just under 20,000 miles.
Recently treated to an extensive detail, this beautiful Porsche is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, manuals, a tool kit, spare tire, jack, and lug wrench, and it features an aftermarket exhaust system that accentuates the already-sonorous engine note.
This spectacular 964 Turbo 3.6 awaits an enthusiastic owner who appreciates the rare opportunity to acquire a prime, low-mileage example of one of Porsche’s most-revered turbocharged 911s.
