When Porsche finally unleashed its 3.6-liter 964 Turbo in January 1993, the automotive world was quite impressed by the new car’s enlarged M64 engine, which delivered 360 hp at 5,500 rpm in US specification. Off-boost performance and driveability were greatly enhanced by the camshafts, fuel-injection system, and single KKK turbocharger that were optimized to deliver greater torque at lower engine revolutions than in previous models. All this newly found power was harnessed by wider 18" Speedline wheels, lowered and stiffened underpinnings, and for the first time, large red-finished Brembo brake calipers.
To say the new Turbo 3.6 was a blistering machine would be a serious understatement. It was reported by Car and Driver to be the best-performing production car in the US when new. Capable of accelerating from rest to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds, the Turbo 3.6 delivered 12.4-second elapsed times in the quarter-mile and impressive braking with 1.2 g deceleration forces. According to Porsche AG, by the time Turbo 3.6 production ceased early in 1994, just 1,437 were built in all, spanning the 1993 and 1994 model years; 847 were built for 1994, including 406 for the US and Canada. As one of the best-performing production models from Porsche, the 964-generation Turbo 3.6 was, and remains, highly sought-after by committed driving enthusiasts worldwide.
According to a recent CARFAX Vehicle History Report, this stunning example’s first owner, an Ontario, Canada, resident, purchased the Turbo on March 30, 1994. It was then sold under Porsche’s pre-owned program and delivered to the next owner in April 1996. In March 2002, according to the CARFAX, it had accumulated 34,216 km (21,260 miles) and, by February 2004, the Turbo was located in British Columbia, remaining there until 2012, when the consignor acquired it. After its import to the US, the Turbo received the care of an authorized Porsche dealer, where the original metric speedometer/odometer was exchanged for one appropriately calibrated in US units at 22,848 miles (36,841 km). Only an additional 306 miles have been traveled for a total of just 23,154 at the time of cataloguing.
