From an Important Maserati Collection
For 1995, Maserati created the Ghibli Open Cup Series to bolster sales of its Ghibli production model. It was a one-make series that used Ghibli road cars modified to competition specifications, including engines prepared by Maserati and Alfa Corse, featuring larger intercoolers, modified engine management systems, and straight-through exhausts. Fewer than 30 cars were built.
The 1995 Open Cup season consisted of eight races, each split into several classes. The races were held in conjunction with the popular German DTM series on classic European circuits. The first season was successful, but the series was canceled due to financial concerns after just two races in the 1996 season. A testament to their durability, it is said that all cars completed the 1995 season without an engine rebuild.
According to the official race record, chassis 361220 won first place in the professional class and took second place overall in the 1995 season, piloted by Federico D’Amore. The car was subsequently fitted with the Maserati-issued Evoluzione specification upgrade in preparation for the 1996 season. Purchased by the consignor in 1997, the car has not been used since. Given its time in static storage, the car will require preparations prior to any track use. This car’s class-winning history and ultimate Evoluzione specification make it an outstanding opportunity to acquire a rare piece of modern Maserati racing history.
