Leo Hindery Jr., California (acquired new in 1997)
Produced from 1994 through 1998, the Type 993 was Porsche’s last air-cooled 911. The new Tony Hatter design preserved many elements of the classic 911 silhouette while giving the car an appealing modern look, and achieving what marque experts considered a revolutionary step up in terms of performance, handling, comfort, and safety.
Borrowing technology from the 959, Porsche’s 1980s supercar sensation, the 993 Turbo arrived in 1995 boasting customary widened bodywork and a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter engine mated to a six-speed gearbox incorporating all-wheel drive. For 1997, in a limited factory-production run, Porsche produced what would become the last air-cooled 911 Turbo – the Turbo S. Fitted with almost every available option as standard, the Turbo S was distinguished from the regular Turbo with Aerokit II front and rear spoilers, a pair of side-mounted air ducts, additional air inlets near the headlights, and yellow brake calipers. Engine improvements yielded 424 hp, 16 additional over the standard turbo. Performance was explosive, with 0–60 in 3.7 seconds and a 184 mph top speed.
This Turbo S was delivered new to Carlsen Porsche of Palo Alto, California, finished in Ocean Blue Metallic with a Classic Grey supple leather interior, floor mats, and an infrared security system in addition to the plethora of standard equipment found on a Turbo S. Leo Hindery Jr. purchased the car from Carlsen and has held it to this day. Mr. Hindery, an accomplished businessman, also is an amateur racer who has competed at the highest levels of motor sport; he has participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans four times, finishing 2nd in Class in 2003 and 1st in Class and 10th Overall in 2005.
In 1998, utilizing his connections with Porsche, Mr. Hindery enhanced the performance of his Turbo S with assistance from Andial in Santa Ana, California, an authority on performance tuning that maintained close ties with Porsche through joint motor sport activities from the 1970s through the 1990s. Included are uprated GT2-specification KKK turbochargers, boost enhancer, and sport exhaust. In 2001, Mr. Hindery increased power by installing an APE Stage II performance kit with Stage III software, and a modified flywheel and clutch assembly to handle an estimated 540 hp.
One of 345 examples produced and only 176 imported into the US, this Turbo S registers less than 22,000 miles from new. As illustrated by accompanying service records, this example clearly has been cherished throughout its life, and was treated to a comprehensive cosmetic detailing costing nearly $4,300 by specialists Paterek Brothers Inc. in Chatham, New Jersey, in August 2017.
One of the rarest, most powerful, and exciting models to sit on the 993 platform, this one-owner Turbo S has a well-documented history and is worthy of the most discerning and enthusiastic Porsche collector.
