Beginning with sales and service of Porsches, RUF Automobile GmbH has evolved into a world-class manufacturer of bespoke supercars. While RUFs share many desirable qualities with their Porsche relatives, they possess an inimitable character and style. In 1981, the German Federal Bureau of Motor Vehicles certified RUF Automobile GmbH as an independent manufacturer, and since then the company has continued to build extraordinary, highhorsepower cars for enthusiasts.
The RUF Turbo R was based on Porsche’s 993 Turbo, the last generation of the air-cooled 911. It received firmer springs, altered shock absorber damping curves, and larger anti-roll bars, while its aerodynamics were optimized with RUF aero outside mirrors and removal of the rain gutters. Extensive engine modifications raised power to 490 hp or more depending on the specification.
This remarkable Turbo R was ordered new from RUF by Dr. Ferdinand Oliver Porsche, the great grandson of Ferdinand Porsche and the former managing director at Porsche Design Management GmbH & Co. KG. The engine was built to full Turbo R specifications with increased output to 520 hp, thanks to a reprogrammed ECU, upgraded KKK turbos, full sports exhaust, cylinder head revisions, re-profiled camshafts, and an RS-spec flywheel. The suspension was comprised of height-adjustable coil-over shock absorbers from H&R, and the Turbo R was beautifully finished in Oak Green Metallic over a black leather interior. Other RUF options included 19" wheels, integrated roll cage, sport seats, RUF steering wheel, RUF front and rear bumpers, and RUF instruments.
The result of all this work is a staggering performance capability, especially compared with its late-1990s contemporaries. RUF claimed 0-62 mph in just 3.6 seconds with a top speed of over 200 mph. As evidenced by maintenance records on file, mechanical work was performed in 2018 at approximately 36,000 miles, including an engine-out service and replacement of filters and fluids, new clutch, wheel refinishing to their original silver color, and new tires. Of note is the fact that this Turbo R was originally delivered without a rear wing, per Mr. Porsche’s specification. The current owner, who believes it was the only example delivered this way, has removed the rear wing that was added by a previous owner, bringing it back to its tasteful as-delivered appearance.
The Turbo R is accompanied by a copy of its RUF delivery confirmation letter, CARFAX Vehicle History Report, maintenance records, and a copy of a letter from Mr. Porsche to a previous owner. With its incredible provenance, lovely color, and potent specification, this is an extremely rare example that would be at home in the world’s most discerning collections.
