Named after the birthplace of Enzo Ferrari and the home of the firm bearing his name, the 360 Modena marked a clear new direction for Ferrari and its road cars. The brilliant product of a four-year development cycle that included 5,400 hours of wind-tunnel testing alone, and engineered with the rigors of real-world driving conditions in mind, the 360 Modena also heralded Ferrari’s partnership with Alcoa on a totally new aluminum space frame chassis, proven 40% stronger than the steel chassis of the prior F355.
Styled by Pininfarina and released for sale in 1999, the new 360 Modena was cloaked in purposefully aggressive aluminum bodywork. Despite somewhat larger overall dimensions, it weighed less than the outgoing F355. Powered by a DOHC all-alloy 3,586 cc V-8 engine with five valves per cylinder, 11:1 compression, and electronic fuel injection, the 360 delivered 400 hp. It initially utilized a six-speed manual gearbox, then progressed to an exclusive F1-derived unit with Magneti-Marelli electro-hydraulic paddle controls. At once lighter, more powerful, more aerodynamic, and offering greater downforce than the F355, the 360 generated lap times at the Fiorano test circuit some three seconds under those generated by its highly regarded predecessor.
Capable of launching from rest to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds en route to a terminal velocity of 183 mph, the 360 Modena redefined Ferrari V-8 road car performance. The open Spider followed the Berlinetta in 2001; in 2004, the Challenge Stradale variant debuted as the final 360 model and the highest-performance, street-legal variant with race-bred features, including carbon-ceramic brakes derived from the Enzo, race-tuned underpinnings, aerodynamic tweaks, reduced weight, increased engine output (now 425 hp), and updated software for the paddle-shifted F1 six-speed, plus carbon-fiber rear view mirrors, 19" Challenge wheels, and specific appearance features.
Purchased new on November 13, 2004, from Ferrari of Houston, this 360 Challenge Stradale was factory-equipped with options including red brake calipers, an Alcantara-wrapped fire extinguisher, tri-color racing stripe, and a stereo system with CD player. A lifelong Texas resident, this example has traveled approximately 9,000 miles from new and has consistently enjoyed climate-controlled storage. A major service was recently completed, including the timing belts, and the original tires were replaced. In addition to the original window sticker and CARFAX and AutoCheck reports, this exceptional supercar is offered with factory accessories, including a Ferrari car cover and Ferrari seat covers with storage bags; the unused, plastic-wrapped tool roll; the unused emergency kit in canvas bag; keys; and the owner’s manuals and supplements in their leather folio. Consigned from a large and respected private collection, and one of only 378 examples thought to have been imported for US sale, this rare and race-bred 360 Challenge Stradale is recently serviced and ready to enjoy.
