Coachwork by Pininfarina
Officially announced at the Paris International Motor Show in 2010, the 599 SA Aperta advanced Ferrari’s peerless tradition of creating limited-edition, open-air V-12 grand touring cars with blistering performance, stunning looks, and extreme rarity. Drawing from the outstanding tradition of the prior 550 Barchetta and 575M Superamerica models, the 599 SA Aperta was built in honor of the landmark 80th anniversary of the venerable Pininfarina design house, a longtime Ferrari collaborator. Additionally, the new model’s “SA” appellation celebrated the many achievements of both Sergio and Andrea Pininfarina during their careers. While the announcement of the 599 SA Aperta might have surprised most onlookers at its Paris introduction, a select group of Ferrari’s best clients already knew of the car’s impending premiere at a special showing at Pebble Beach. Just 80 examples of the 599 SA Aperta were planned, and the entire production run was already spoken for by the time it was publicly launched at Paris.
Even though the SA “Aperta,” or “Open,” was based on the harder-core 599 GTO chassis and drivetrain that were derived from the track-ready 599XX, Ferrari made only minor changes to the car’s basic character. The low-slung windscreen was given a steeper rake, and two aerodynamic fins were placed just behind the roll bars to beautifully recall the attractive flying buttresses of the basic 599 design. A pair of discreet roll bars echoed the lines of the seat backs. The car featured a lowered suspension and other tweaks optimizing the SA Aperta for fast long-distance, open-air cruising. While the SA Aperta chassis was stiffened to compensate for the modifications required by its open-air body, structural rigidity remained similar to that of the GTO with only a modest weight penalty. Intended from the outset as a roadster, the 599 SA Aperta was equipped with a light soft top for emergency use, if the owners found themselves suddenly subject to foul weather conditions. Additionally, the veritable plethora of available color and trim combinations ensured that every 599 SA Aperta reflected its buyers’ specific tastes, and few, if any, examples of the car were identical to one another.
No motorcar bearing the Ferrari name is complete without stunning performance, and the 599 SA Aperta is no exception. Featuring excellent balance and weight distribution, the 6.0-liter V-12 engine of the 599 SA Aperta delivered stunning abilities with acceleration from rest to 62 mph in just 3.6 seconds, en route to a mind-numbing 202 mph top-end charge. An F1 six-speed, paddle-shifted gearbox delivered lightning-fast, race-bred gear changes and handling was enhanced with SCM magnetorheological dampers.
A wonderful crowning statement for the beautifully aggressive and storming 599-series Ferrari models, the 599 SA Aperta exemplifies true Continental elegance with unimpeachable sporting credentials and stunning performance.
Whether used for a quick blast up a mountain road or for a more relaxed cruise along a beautifully winding coastal highway, the 599 SA Aperta is extremely rare and few have ever left the care of their lucky original owners. Now offered with approximately 350 miles at the time of cataloguing and beautifully finished in extremely rare Avio Metallic Azure California paint, this stunning example is quite possibly the sole example so finished. It is further complete with an optional carbon-fiber removable roof panel, which was a factory-original option demanding a premium of an additional $45,000 over the vehicle’s basic purchase price.
Ready to enjoy, this 599 SA Aperta is at once historic and very rare, and its offering now provides an exceptional opportunity to acquire and savor one of Ferrari’s most beautiful, compelling, and fast modern supercars.
