Porsche’s 911 RS – denoting RennSport – dates back to the dazzling Carrera 2.7 RS of 1973. The name was revived in the 1990s, when the 911 Turbo was transformed into the successful GT2 race car. The Porsche GT1 was introduced in 1996, and won the Le Mans 24 Hours outright only two years later. The GT3 RS on offer is the direct descendant of this cutting-edge lineage.

Inspired by GT Director Andreas Preuninger, with input from two-time world champion rally driver Walter Röhrl, the lightweight 996 GT3 RS was launched in 1999, with a privateer version in 2003. It proved an immediate hit, winning the GT Class of the American Le Mans Series seven times, the Nürburgring 24 Hours six times, and both Spa and Daytona in 2003.

The 997 GT3 RS Series One was introduced in 2006. It was patterned after the new 997 platform, but was 1.7" wider than the base GT3, using the Carrera 4 body. The model was powered by Hans Mezger’s venerable flat six, which powered Porsche’s 962 and the GT1, and scored a record 16 Le Mans 24 Hours victories. During GT3 RS testing, Walter Röhrl set a Nürburgring Nordschleife record at 7 minutes, 42 seconds.

In 2010, the 997 GT3 RS Series Two presented a new 3.8-liter version of the Mezger engine, which generated 450 bhp. Motor Trend writer Carlos Lago tested the 2011 997 GT3 RS and recorded 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds, but ran out of room before the top speed of 193 mph. He called the GT3 “one of the Porsches that Dad warned you about, the ones from the old days. It is frighteningly old school, rattling like a dry-clutch Ducati at a stoplight, threatening to break you for one mistake.”

The 997 GT3 RS on offer is a two-owner car from climate-controlled garages, and had been driven less than 900 miles when catalogued. It is believed to be one of three finished in paint-to-sample black, with red graphics and red central-locking wheels. This Porsche is fitted with the Sport Chrono Package, and the interior is black leather with an Alcantara steering wheel, red seat belts, and the PCM/3.0 extended audio system.

Exclusive Custom Options include red instrument dials and an extended carbon fiber package. This car is also fitted with the desirable front axle lifting system. The original window sticker, owner’s manuals and tools are included with the sale.

At its core, the lightweight 997 GT3 RS 3.8 has the spirit of a competitive race car that also carries impressive road manners. What true enthusiast could resist that?
