First introduced in 1979, the iconic G-Model – or Geländewagen – evolved from the V-8 powered G55 to the 6.0-liter G65 model in 2012, culminating in an ultimate twin-turbocharged V-12 Final Edition in 2018. With a limited production of only 65 units worldwide, the G65 Final Edition represented the last of the legendary G-Class series – a rugged vehicle originally designed as a troop transporter whose body lines projected an image of purposeful utility. Hand-assembled at the Magna Steyr factory in Graz, Austria, it was the highest development of this proven platform, built with over-the-top performance that could only have come from the minds of AMG’s daring engineers.
The G65’s V-12 biturbo engine featured a multi-spark ignition and a responsive engine management system good for an outlandish 621 hp and 0–100 km/h in 5.3 seconds, which Mercedes-Benz claimed made it the world’s most powerful series-production off-road vehicle. An AMG Speedshift Plus 7G Tronic automatic transmission directed power to all four wheels through triple electronic-locking differentials. Augmenting those impressive capabilities was a sporting exterior, set off by forged 21", light-alloy wheels in bronze, silver brake calipers, and gloss-black AMG trim flanking the body. Matte bronze accents extended to the bellypan, bumper trim, spare tire cover, exterior mirrors, and grille surround. A carbon fiber and aluminum engine cover nicely finished the underhood aesthetic of the massive V-12 powerplant.
The theme carried over into the G65’s opulent interior. The black Nappa leather AMG Performance steering wheel and diamond-quilted seats were offset by bronze-colored stitching. Carbon fiber trim pieces throughout the cabin featured a light bronze weave, and Final Edition badging complemented the AMG-logo embossed headrests.
In its May 2018 issue, Road & Track magazine lamented the end of the original G-Wagen, writing, “You could feel its military roots with every mile. It was the vehicle we enthusiasts always swore we’d buy if automakers just had the guts to make them: A classic body with a modern-ish drivetrain.”
The example offered here is an extremely low-mileage Mercedes-AMG G65 Final Edition. Purchased new in April 2018, it has seen only limited use from its two careful owners. Optioned with the G-Class scratch resistant paint in Obsidian Black Metallic over black Nappa carbon fiber patterned leather interior, this handsomely appointed G65 embodied the Final Edition’s succinct advertising slogan, “Powerful and Refined.” Showing less than 150 miles from new, and offered with a CARFAX Vehicle History Report, factory documentation, and accessories, this exclusive G-Wagen represents a rare opportunity at owning the last of a legendary lineage of sport utility vehicles.
