1922 Avions Voisin C3 Strasbourg Recreation

The Avions Voisin C3 Strasbourg (C3 S) was a significant improvement over the standard C3, with the inline four-cylinder engine positioned lower in the frame, leading to improved road handling. Gabriel Voisin and his chief engineer, André Lefèbvre, fashioned the C3 Strasbourg’s narrow torpedo body with elongated and streamlined running boards that extended just enough to meet the minimum 1.30 meter width requirement. The C3 S debuted at the ACF’s Grand Prix de Tourisme in Strasbourg, where Voisin entered four Type C3 S cars. These were driven by Rougier, Duray, Gaudermon, and Piccioni, who finished in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th place, respectively. Following this success, Voisin took what he had learned from the C3 S and integrated it into the new C5 series.

Sadly, none of the original C3 S cars remain in existence today. This C3 S was created by Voisin enthusiast Philipp Moch using a C5 chassis frame and other factory components to replicate the lost car driven to victory at Strasbourg by Rougier. Following completion, this Voisin was displayed by Mr. Moch at the 2006 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance® and driven on the Tour d’Elegance. The Mullin Collection acquired this Voisin in 2010, and it was regularly displayed in the museum’s loft alongside other significant Voisin production and racing cars. A faithful recreation of one of Voisin’s most significant cars, this C3 S offers a rare opportunity to acquire one of the defining designs of Gabriel Voisin’s early career.
